“Tell me a secret,” Carol murmured, brushing her lips against Doug’s chest in the wee hours of the morning.
He paused and ran his fingers through her curls. “I have a son.”
She froze and he felt her begin to slide away from him. He didn’t bother to stop her.
“I’ve never met him. I don’t even know his name. He’s six.” His words whispered a chill across her skin.
She shivered. “Wow, Doug.” She laid her head back on his chest, her open palm flat beside her cheek. She felt his heart beat under her ear and she closed her eyes to listen.
He wondered if she could hear that his heart was broken.
